Poké Regulations — Do Pokemons live in Minnesota parks? Yes they do! Of course, for outdoor enthusiasts finding them is called: Pokéhunt. Minnesota does not require a permit (yet). Harvest to your heart’s content.

Free Outdoor Activities
Join the MN DNR, Federal Fish & Wildlife, City Parks & Rec, and more throughout the summer for free fun activities outside for the whole family. There’s something for everyone: women only, singles, adults, kids only, families. And what’s cooler than a Meteor Shower Party? Other than a Garlic Fest, of course (maybe). Itasca’s Mysteries in History: The Jefferson Highway
10:30 AM to 12 PM Meet at Forest Inn (across from Douglas Lodge.)

All roads lead to Itasca, including the historic Jefferson Highway. With the advent of cars, touring became popular with all sectors of America. View a short slide show on the Jefferson Highway then head out onto the trails as we walk to one of the original Jefferson Highway road markers. Notes: bring your vehicle to drive a short distance to the trail head for the walk to the marker.

Outdoor Kids: Fish Painting
2 PM to 3:30 PM Kids of all ages come out and explore nature at your leisure. This program series allows kids to connect with nature through hands-on activities that focus on life around the lake. Have fun discovering Itasca while hanging out at the swimming beach or playground.

Waterfowl of Northeastern Minnesota
7 PM to 8 PM Do you know the difference between a duck, merganser, goose, or loon? Come find out as DNR Area Wildlife staff share information on common area waterfowl, management tools and success stories. Meet at Trail Center. No fee.
Bear Head Lake State Park

Nature Explorations: Reptiles and Amphibians
1 PM to 3 PM Snakes? Toads? Oh, no! These things are nothing to be afraid of. And they won’t give you warts! Meet the naturalist at the Picnic Area near the beach to learn about the reptiles and amphibians of Minnesota. We will be playing some games, attempting to capture a few of these creatures, and will even do a craft you can take home with you. This program designed for children aged 5-15, but all are welcome. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

A MN state park vehicle permit is required to attend this event. Permits can be purchased at the park office for $5/day or $25/annual.
Glacial Lakes State Park

Beginning Canoeing
9:30 AM to 11:30 AM Meet at the boat access near the beach every other Wednesday in June, July and August to learn canoeing basics from a Naturalist. We will cover safety, parts of the canoe and paddles, and learn strokes before heading out on to the water to practice our skills. Equipment will be provided, so come enjoy a paddle on a quite lake. Please call the park to register for this event or for more information.

A MN state park vehicle permit is required to attend this event. Permits can be purchased at the park office for $5/day or $25/annual.
Glacial Lakes State Park

Lake Superior Yoga
8 AM to 9 AM Let your partner get the kids fed at your campsite and come on down to Lake Superior for a relaxing yoga session. Yoga sessions will meet on the plaza behind the Visitor Center or in the Tettegouche Meeting Room if the weather is not nice. Bring a yoga pad or sleeping mat if you have one, otherwise loaners are available.

$10 per person fee.

Lake Superior Agates Discovery Cart
1:30 PM to 3 PM Do you know your agates? Discover the geologic forces involved in their creation and learn the different types. Uncover the secrets of Minnesota?s state gem and how they came to be on the North Shore. Spot the different between real and look-a-likes in our rock bins.

Birds Discovery Tent
1 PM to 3 PM Drop in and learn about many of the birds that call Gooseberry State Park home. Try your luck identifying birds based on their unique songs and calls. You will be able to make your very own bird feeder to take home.

Weather Watchers
2 PM to 3 PM Wind, Water, Heat, and snow! What is the recipe for a thunderstorm or a blizzard? Join a naturalist for a closer look at the weather around us. 

Meet inside the interpretive center theater for some weather investigating on a different topic each week of August, followed by making some of our own scientific observations outdoors.

Circle Time Under the Pines: M is for Mississippi River
10:30 AM to 11:30 AM  Meet by the Museum Amphitheater (Look for a large blanket underneath a big pine tree), below Wegmann’s Store, (If raining, meet inside Lakeside Museum). Children 2-5 years old, come explore and have fun at Itasca as we learn about the Mississippi River through stories, songs, crafts, and outdoor discovery. NOTES: Adults must accompany children. Consider bringing a picnic lunch and enjoying your noon meal at the park after the program.

Special emphasis is placed on nature observation skills, exploring safely and activities to do in your own backyard. The “Nature Play” series of programs will occur weekly through August 25th.

Nature in All Seasons
7 PM to 8 PM Seasonal changes in nature are called Phenology. Join a naturalist and explore the world of Gooseberry as we take a closer look at the phenology of the park. You?ll create a unique journal to record and remember your nature observations. Be ready to find nature on a short ¼ mile walk. Bug spray and camera are recommended.

Prairie Preschool: Air Series
10:30 AM to 11:30 AM Little naturalists, ages 2-6, are welcome each Thursday for Prairie Preschool. We will explore a monthly theme using play, stories, hands-on activities, and short hikes. Children of all ages welcome but lessons are designed for early learners. Air theme topics include flying kites and looking for monarchs. Program starts at the Nature Center. 

Consider packing a lunch and your swimsuit to enjoy the picnic grounds and swimming beach at Buffalo River State Park. Event is free but there is a $5 daily fee to enter the state park or you can purchase an annual pass. In the event of rain, program will take place inside the Nature Center.

White Pine Theater: “The Calico Tiger”
7:30 PM to 8:30 PM Bemidji Community Theater and Lake Bemidji State Park look forward to presenting “The Calico Tiger,” by Christian B. Garrison. This children’s drama will be performed outside at the park’s amphitheater under the pines. “As the tiger enters the forest, the other animals are frightened and they hide, leaving the tiger lonely and without friends. After all, he can’t change his fierce appearance. Then the other animals devise a plan – and it works, until….” The play is about an hour long and appropriate for all ages. No tickets are needed but vehicle permits are required to enter the park.

Night Sky of the Northwoods
8:30 PM to 10 PM Join us as we take you on a spectacular tour of the night skies. After a short indoor presentation, we venture outside to view the celestial sights through provided binoculars and telescope. Please use the main park entrance and meet in the visitor center. Be sure to dress for being outside. The program is free of charge.
Lake Vermilion – Soudan Underground Mine State Park

Archery in the Park
3 PM to 5 PM The sport of shooting arrows has been around for thousands of years. First humans used archery as a way to hunt animals and later as a way to compete against each other. Archery is an activity that people from all walks of life and almost every size and ability can participate and have fun . This program covers the basics of archery (safety, proper care of the equipment and how to use a bow). Participants will be able to practice their new skills on a target. Please meet at staff housing area right before the contact station when you enter the park.
Flandrau State Park

Flandrau State Park Story
7 PM to 8 PM In the 1930s the state of Minnesota established this state park along the Cottonwood River to provide a water-based 
recreation area. Starting in 1935 a number of federal relief programs built many of structures and features found here today including the Beach House. One of the major projects involved building a dam on the Cottonwood River and creating a 200 acre reservoir. We will look back at what makes Flandrau State unique and some of the changes that have taken place. Meet at the playground at the Day Use Area near the swimming pond.

Owl Prowl
8 PM to 9:30 PM We often hear them calling in the dark of night, but most of us are unfamiliar with the elusive creatures known as owls. At this program, you will learn how to identify the owls of Whitewater State Park by their calls as well as by their appearance and habitat needs. After the presentation, we will go “prowling” for owls using our new owling skills. This program is guaranteed to be a “hoot” for all ages!

8:30 PM to 9:30 PM No cell phones, no video games…What did Minnesota’s European settlers do for fun?!? Join us at the amphitheater for an evening’s entertainment – games, stories, and especially music – to get a taste of what life and leisure were like around Forestville over 100 years ago. In the words of pioneer and author Laura Ingalls Wilder, “If you want the spirit of those old times, you should [hear] these old songs.”

Universe in the Park
8:30 PM to 10 PM University of Minnesota graduate students present this program on astronomy and the night sky. It begins with a powerpoint presentation indoors. If the sky is clear, participants will enjoy the night sky through telescopes.

Lake Maria State Park

A Pelican Brief
7 PM to 8 PM Did you know a pelican can hold up to 3 gallons of water in its huge bill! One of the largest birds in North America it can be seen flying overhead and bobbing in the waters of Lake Andrew. 

Meet the naturalist at Cedar Hill Shelter to discover more amazing facts about the white pelican. 

Bug spray and a camp chair recommended, picnic tables are available for seating.
Sibley State Park

I Can Fish!
3 PM to 5 PM Join us as we learn all about fishing – identifying species, casting, and more. Then use your new skills to fish from the bank of the Rum River. We provide the poles, bait and instructor. Minnesota residents do not need a fishing license for this activity. Meet at the interpretive Center. We will walk a short distance, fish until 4:30, then finish up back at the interpretive center by 5 p.m.

9 AM to 11 AM Join a naturalist every Friday for a morning of fishing and hands-on learning. We will discover the world of fish and then show you how to catch them. Meet at the amphitheater. Only non-Minnesota residents need a fishing license.

Pothole Exploration Tour
12 PM to 1 PM Discover how lakes of lava and gushing glacial waters formed the park’s unique potholes as you journey over, under and through world-renowned rock features on this naturalist-guided tour. This 45-minute walk includes some uneven terrain and stairs. Meet at the visitor center.
Interstate State Park

All About Rocks
7 PM to 8 PM Listen to the rocks as they tell of lava flows, glaciers and roaring rivers. Learn to distinguish between the common rocks of the North Shore. Discover the creation of the Lake Superior agate and hone in on your rock identification skills.

3 PM to 4 PM Do you know which fish can live over a hundred years? Drop by this ongoing activity to test your knowledge of the incredible fish hiding within the St. Croix River. Find us near the visitor center between 3 and 4 p.m.

8 AM to 9 AM Beat the heat and get out for a faster paced hike around the park with a naturalist. Together we will determine our path, whether it is hiking the roads and visiting the campsites or hitting a trail, and our pace, from brisk to casual.

Wolves, Coyotes & Foxes
7 PM to 8 PM These three animals share a lot of similar characteristics and are part of the Canidae or Dog family along with jackals and domestic dogs. They have large ears, long bushy tails, an elongated nuzzle and the black, wet nose. Some of their similar characteristics these canids share include marking their territory, digging a den for their pups and the ability to run down their prey. We will also talk about how they are different and dress someone up as a coyote. Please meet at Group Campground on the campground side of Minneopa State Park.

Fossil Field Trip
10 AM to 12 PM On this trip you will find, and can keep, fossils of plants and animals that lived here hundreds of millions of years ago. They were on earth long before the dinosaurs! What can they tell us about this area’s past? Fossil cards, to display your collection, will be distributed. Bring transportation, as the site is nine miles from the park.

Ghost Town Cemetery Field Trip
5:30 PM to 7:30 PM The town of Beaver was abandoned in 1938 after repeated flooding. This ghost town cemetery holds many stories of pioneers, civil war veterans, Minnesota conservation hero Richard Dorer and others who have lived in the Whitewater Valley. Join us for a cemetery visit and learn some fascinating history about the area. Bring your own transportation as the cemetery is located 5 miles north of the park. We’ll begin at the Visitor Center.

Perseid Meteor Shower
8:30 PM to 10 PM Experience “meteor whiplash” during the best meteor shower of the year! Members of the Hiawatha Valley Astronomical Society will provide telescopes, expertise and slides introducing our solar system, galaxy, and beyond! There will be a program rain or shine.

The Night Sky
9 PM to 10 PM Explore the constellations and other amazing things found in the night sky. We will meet at the amphitheater for a short slideshow program introduction then head to our Angler’s Lot to view the sky. Limited binoculars will be available for use. Feel free to bring your own binoculars or telescopes for this stellar event!
Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park

Monarch Butterflies
10 AM to 11 AM Join Katy Gillispie, Master Naturalist, to learn about monarch butterflies. The program will include live caterpillars and other hands-on materials. You will learn about the life cycle, migration, population status, milkweed plants, how to look for signs of monarch activity and what you can do to help the population in your backyard. Following the program we will look for caterpillars and eggs on milkweed plants in the park. Ask the naturalist for your “Call of the Wildflower” 2016 Special Edition Program Card following the program.
Nerstrand-Big Woods State Park

Archery in the Park
2 PM to 4 PM Archery has been a life skill and fun sport for centuries. Join certified archery instructors for hands-on coaching and have a try at our temporary archery range. This activity is for anyone age 8 and older. Children 15 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Personal archery equipment is not allowed due to state law. In case of rain this program will be cancelled. Stop by the range in Lakeview Picnic Area any time between 2p.m. and 4 p.m.
Father Hennepin State Park

125 Night Hike in the Prairie
8:30 PM to 10 PM Enjoy gazing up at the stars? Then join us on a 1.5 mile self guided hike out in the prairie! You will get a full unobstructed view of the night sky. The trail will begin at the Visitor Center. Be sure to dress for being outside. 

Trying for the 125 miles by Bike, Boot or Boat Challenge? This event can help you add a little distance!
Lake Bronson State Park

Monarch Butterfly Tagging
2 PM to 4 PM Explore the fascinating world of Minnesota’s state butterfly, the monarch butterfly! Learn about the different life stages of monarchs by observing real monarchs in each life stage. Participants will also learn why monarchs play such an important role as plant pollinators. 

Presentation will begin at 2pm at the Education Center located at the park office. Following the presentation, participants can assist with the catching and tagging of wild monarch butterflies. Butterfly nets and tags will be provided. Long pants and lace up shoes/boots are recommended. Transportation to butterfly catching area is required. Participants must provide own transportation. Open to all ages.
Lac Qui Parle State Park

Trail Running
9 AM to 10:30 AM Get together with other runners to explore Lake Bemidji State Park! Local long-distance trail runners Cris and Jill Bitker will lead the way with tips for getting the most out of off-the-pavement miles. This week participants will decide the route–time to explore someplace new? This run will wrap up our summer series–but Cris and Jill will fill us in on events coming up this fall. Meet at the Visitor Center at 9 am. Wear comfortable running clothes; water and powerade supplied. No fee for activity; vehicle permit ($5 daily/$25 annual) required to enter the park. Trail miles count toward the 125-mile Bike, Boot, and Boat Challenge!

125th Parks Anniversary Special Program: Perseid Meteor Shower Party!
7 PM to 10 PM Join us for an “out of this world” astronomical evening! At 7: 00 p.m. join professional storyteller, Dwight Wilcox, as he tells you constellation stories around the campfire. Then stick around as at 8:30 p.m. the University of Minnesota’s “Universe in The Park” program will have a short indoor program on exactly what is the Perseid Meteor Shower and then they will bring out telescopes to view some spectacular evening night sky objects! If it is cloudy, we will still have most of the activities. Bring your blanket or lawn chair for the stories and then as we watch the night skies and wish upon some shooting stars! Meet at the Visitor Center.

Women’s Interpretive Bike Ride – Gateway State Trail
9 AM to 11 AM Join the Naturalist on a ride along this old railroad corridor and discover some great places. This ride will be approximately 14 miles from Hadley to Pine Point Park. Bring your own bike and helmet.

7:30 PM to 8 PM Did you know that elk, once found in our state, were reintroduced at Itasca State Park? Gather around the campfire and learn about the transport of elk from the Yellowstone area of Wyoming and the herd that was once located in Itasca.

S’mores and More
7 PM to 9 PM Join a parks and trails manager for s’mores and a campfire in the picnic area near the Lodge Campground. Share your ideas and feedback on Minnesota State Parks and Trails while enjoying your marshmallows by the lake.

In case of rain, meet in the lodge by the fireplace. Don’t forget to bring your own camp chair and bug spray (if needed)!

12 PM to 1 PM Discover how lakes of lava and gushing glacial waters formed the park’s unique potholes as you journey over, under and through world-renowned rock features on this naturalist-guided tour. This 45-minute walk includes some uneven terrain and stairs. Meet at the visitor center.

Veteran’s Conservation Corps Scavenger Hunt
10 AM to 4 PM Step into the past with this fun scavenger hunt. Explore different parts of the park and see if you can take a family photo of the same locations as our historic photos! Then return to the interpretive center to show off your finds and win a prize! 
A limited number of cameras are available for checkout. This is a drop in program, starting at the interpretive center.

A Musical Celebration of our State and National Parks

Once upon a time, long long ago, groups of people would look up into the night sky and imagine shapes and pictures that were made up of stars. They would tell stories about how those images, or constellations, appeared in order to remind others of the lessons they learned. Join a naturalist at the campground boat landing amphitheater to hear some of those stories and discover how to find some of the constellations in our night sky. Meet in the picnic shelter if raining.

Meet the naturalist on the back deck of the St. Croix Lodge Interpretive Center to learn fishing skills. Tie a fishing knot, practice casting, make a fish print and check out a fishing kit to try your luck on the river. This program is appropriate for all ages.

Join the naturalist for a guided 5-mile trip down the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. Rent a canoe or kayak from Pardun’s Canoe Rental office, located in the nature store building, 320-384-0508. Meet outside the store before 2 p.m. Bring sunscreen, water and a snack and dress for swimming.

Junior Naturalist: Mini Worlds Magnified

Kids and your adults, a strange and incredible world is hidden among the rocks and logs of the park. To see it, you’ll need a magnifying glass. Decorate your own mini magnifying glass to keep and then explore with it during a short, naturalist-led walk. Meet at the Campground Clubhouse. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The walk will be less than a half mile in length.

Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers Tour

Tour begins at the Levorsen Building located on the Pioneer Farmer showgrounds.* The showground is located on the north side of Itasca State Park. Go out the North Entrance to Itasca State Park, entrance is on the east side of the North Entrance Road (across from the church and gas station).*Tour begins promptly at 10 a.m.

Get a feel for the early 1900s community of Lake Itasca at the Lake Itasca Region Pioneer Farmers Showgrounds (LIRPF). See the Itasca Historic Sawmill. Explore various buildings from a country school, dove-tail one-room log house and a logging museum.

Yoga under the Pines
8:30 AM to 9:30 AM Join us for yoga under the serene pines of Lake Bemidji State Park. Feel the power of the wind while balancing in Tree Pose. Hum with the songbirds while relaxing in Savasana. Did you know the scent of pine has been shown to provide relaxation? Sessions will be 45 minutes. Bring a mat, blanket, or towel. A small number of blocks and straps will be provided. No fee for the class but vehicle permits are required for park entry. Please allow time to park and walk to the west picnic area.

I Can Fish – Trout Fishing
10:30 AM to 12 PM Join us at the South Picnic Area for some fishing fun! Equipment will be provided at this activity designed to introduce trout fishing to inexperienced anglers, families and youth groups. Youngsters must be accompanied by an adult. Bring your own bait; worms often work best. Fishing licenses and trout stamps are not required when fishing during the activity. This program will be offered at Whitewater every Sunday through September 4.

Pioneer/Old Time Music & Bluegrass Jam
3 PM to 5 PM Imagine the songs that echoed off the bluffs in the Whitewater Valley during the days of the pioneers. Park visitors along with bluegrass pickers and old time music players of all skill levels are invited to re-create the music of our ancestors the second Sunday of each month, May – October. Meet at the amphitheater behind the visitor center.

Picnic in the Park: 25th Anniversary of Glendalough State Park
12 PM to 3 PM Come celebrate one of Minnesota’s newest state parks. Glendalough is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Pack a picnic lunch and head down to the historic lodge and trail center shoreline to enjoy your meal. There will be music, games, and a special program to follow. Activities will be available starting at noon and the program will start at 2pm. Come early or stay late and tour the lodge, take a paddle, go swimming, hike the trails or take a ride on the paved bike trail.

A MN state Park vehicle permit is required to attend this event, and can be purchased at the park for $5/day or $25 for an annual permit.

Itasca’s Music Under the Pines: Lori Goulet Reich
7 PM to 8:30 PM Meet inside Forest Inn (across from Douglas Lodge)

Join Lori Goulet Reich, a Lake Itasca Transplant from the suburbs of Minneapolis, as she performs a variety of music best described as acoustic folk and alt-country flavored music. Lori also has played in various bands both classic rock and country, so come enjoy a variety of well-known tunes.

Community Concert: The Pine Tones
2 PM to 3 PM The Pine Tones A Capella Quartet brings a mix of all kinds of quartet music, from madrigals to doowop and barbershop. Most of our songs are arranged for us by members of the quartet and bring delightfully fun interpretations to standards from Johnny Cash, Roger Miller, and even Peggy Lee! Our hour-long program usually includes a few spirituals and some patriotic selections as well. Group members include Whitney Berry, Jim Gurney, Shar Paquette, and Charlie Parson.

Thomson Hydroelectric Tour
1 PM to 3 PM For over 100 years Minnesota Power’s Thomson hydroelectric station has been providing electricity for surrounding communities. Learn about its history, how the 2012 affected it and how we are preparing for future energy demands using renewable energy. 


Where to Meet Meet at the River Inn Interpretive Center. 

Registration: Register beforehand by calling the park. A limited number of people are allowed on tour due to safety considerations.

What to bring: Participants must drive their own vehicle. We will be outside most of the program. Please note that the inside of the power plant can be warm. Dress accordingly. 

Program difficulty: At one stop there is a short climb uphill to view the reservoir. Inside the power plant there are stairs to climb.

Who Should Attend? This program is for participants 10 years old and up. Due to possible electromagnetic radiation inside the power plant, it is not recommended that people with pacemakers tour the plant.

Program fee: There is no fee for the program itself. However, all vehicles entering a MN State Park need a vehicle permit. A daily permit for $5 or an annual permit for $25 can be purchased upon arrival. The annual permit is good for 12 months at any MN State Park.

Calling all Pokémon trainers! Join a naturalist on a hunt through the park searching for new Pokémon to catch! As we explore some of the unique features within the park, we will also have the chance to find a few PokéStops and even a Gym! At the end of the hunt stick around as we set up a lure station so you can catch even more Pokémon and meet some of your fellow trainers. Children must be accompanied by an adult. What to bring: Fully charged phone – Pokémon Go App downloaded and logged into, sturdy closed toed shoes. Meet at the visitor center.

Dragonfly Workshop at Itasca State Park

Meet at the Jacob V. Brower Visitor Center

Interested in dragonflies? Come attend a dragonfly workshop sponsored by the Minnesota Dragonfly Society. This free workshop includes a dragonfly presentation and fieldwork. Participants will catch and identify dragonflies with help from experts. Beginners and families are welcome. 

Minnesota has about 150 species of dragonflies and damselflies, and their ranges are still being defined. Participants will help determine which species are present in Clearwater County. 

Workshop attendees should dress for the weather and bring a bag lunch, cool drinks, and snacks. Participants might also bring rubber boots or old sneakers for wet sites, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Loaner field guides and insect nets are provided.
