9–11 AM Join a naturalist every Friday for a morning of fishing and hands-on learning. We will discover the world of fish and then show you how to catch them. Bring your own bait, worms work best. Also bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Limited rods and reels will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the amphitheater. Only non-Minnesota residents need a fishing license.

9:30 AM to 10:30 AM Limnology is the study of freshwater lakes and streams, so from the vantage point of the park pontoon, the naturalist will explain the many changes the lake environment goes through during the year. The test equipment demonstration will show changes in light penetration, oxygen content and plankton that supports the life in Lake Bemidji. Seating is limited to 25 passengers, so sign up is required at the park office or by calling 218-308-2300.

11 AM to 11:30 AM In 1903 Mary Gibbs took a stance for the park at a logging dam along the Mississippi River. Courageously she placed her hands on the lever in defense of the park’s forests, rivers and lakes, while being threatened by a gun-toting site foreman. Walk with the naturalists to the approximate location of the logging dam as we learn more about Mary Gibbs, defender of Itasca.

1 PM to 2 PM Fort Ridgely State Park has a rich history with the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and the Veterans Conservation Corp (VCC). During the 1930s the state park and historic site benefited from their labor with new park construction and archeological discoveries. The hiking tour will go through wooded hillsides along unpaved trails. The hike will start at the Commissary building at the Historic Site.

Stuck Between a Rock and a Streambed
2–3:30 PM Fish, crawdads, and water striders come to mind when people think of animals that live in a stream. There are, however, other tiny creatures under and amongst the rocks of Forestville’s streams that can be used as an indicator of stream health. Help a park naturalist capture and identify these hidden animals during this fun and refreshing program! 7 PM to 8:30 PM Take a short half hour lake tour of the park, on the 24 passenger pontoon boat. The trips will leave from the dock on the east side of the Bass Creek foot bridge at 7p.m., 7:30p.m., and 8 p.m.. Passengers accepted on a first come first served basis, maximum capacity 24 passengers per trip. All pontoon trips are subject to favorable weather conditions.

07/16/16 Archaeology at the Little Elk River Mission Site
8 PM to 9 PM In 1839 a Methodist Episcopal Mission was established on the Mississippi River, near the village of the influential Ojibwe leader Hole-in-the-Day the Elder. Although the mission was only there for a couple of years, this archaeological site in the Little Elk Unit of Charles A. Lindbergh State Park holds potential to answer important questions about a pivotal time in Minnesota’s history. This slide show and talk about archaeology conducted at the site in 2014 will be followed by a look at some artifacts uncovered in the excavations. Meet at the Amphitheater. In case of rain the program will be held in the picnic shelter.

Watch hundreds of bats depart from their roosts for an evening of feeding. While our bats are healthy, you will also find out what emerging threat has decimated bat numbers elsewhere.
