Happy summer! The fireflies and monarchs are out (and mosquitoes, ah well). MN Nature has fun activities this week for you, and as always most are free and family-friendly. We also want to share KD Novelties great 10 Fun Summer Activities To Do With Your Kids — Check it out!

Friday, July 15

07/15/16 Fishing Frenzy Fridays
9–11 AM Join a naturalist every Friday for a morning of fishing and hands-on learning. We will discover the world of fish and then show you how to catch them. Bring your own bait, worms work best. Also bring a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Limited rods and reels will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the amphitheater. Only non-Minnesota residents need a fishing license.

9:30 AM to 10:30 AM Limnology is the study of freshwater lakes and streams, so from the vantage point of the park pontoon, the naturalist will explain the many changes the lake environment goes through during the year. The test equipment demonstration will show changes in light penetration, oxygen content and plankton that supports the life in Lake Bemidji. Seating is limited to 25 passengers, so sign up is required at the park office or by calling 218-308-2300.

10 AM to 2 PM Discover the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, Minnesota’s state insect, with Tom and Carol Uecker. Have fun seeing samples of the caterpillar, chrysalis, and the adult. Visit for as little or as long as you like.

11 AM to 12:30 PM Listen to the rocks as they tell of lava flows, glaciers and roaring rivers on this hike of discovery. Join the Naturalist around the middle and lower falls. Majority of the hike will involve descending stairs. Meet at the Visitor Center Art Column.

07/15/16 She Had Nerve and a Big Gun! The Mary Gibbs Story
11 AM to 11:30 AM In 1903 Mary Gibbs took a stance for the park at a logging dam along the Mississippi River. Courageously she placed her hands on the lever in defense of the park’s forests, rivers and lakes, while being threatened by a gun-toting site foreman. Walk with the naturalists to the approximate location of the logging dam as we learn more about Mary Gibbs, defender of Itasca.

Noon-1 PM Discover how lakes of lava and gushing glacial waters formed the park’s unique potholes as you journey over, under and through world-renowned rock features on this naturalist-guided tour. This 45-minute walk includes some uneven terrain and stairs. Meet at the visitor center.

1 PM to 2:30 PM Face your fears and make peace with our wild wasps and bees. This amazing and beneficial group of insects includes such fascinating creatures as Beewolves, Orchard Bees, Stump-stabbers, Sand Wasps, Leaf-cutter Bees, Velvet Ants, Cricket Hunters, Hornets, and Cicada Killers. Scott King, author of “A Photographic Guide to Some Common Wasps and Bees of Minnesota”, will give a short presentation and then lead the group into the field to find, observe, photograph and identify as many local species as possible. Begins in the Visitor Center Auditorium.

2:30–4 PM Turtles have some neat adaptations that other animals don’t have. Even here in the park, turtles face many challenges. The naturalist will be roaming around the campgrounds and the beach. 7:30 PM to 8:30 PM Enjoy an evening of good old fashioned nature movies as we play ‘Two Little Owls’ and ‘Mississippi Waters.’ These educational nature center classics are reminiscent of the old fashioned 16 mm film in VHS video format. Fly Fishing Clinic
9 AM to 3 PM A fly rod whips back and forth, depositing a home-spun lure above the gaping mouth of a northern or bass, the perfect cast, and it could be yours! Learn the basics of fly fishing from DNR Minnaqua experts, practice knot tying and casting, then test your new skills on Lac qui Parle Lake. All equipment is provided. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, and a bag lunch. A fishing license is required only if you are not a Minnesota resident. Participants must be at least eight years old. 10 AM to 11:30 AM Foraging for wild mushrooms is a fun activity with tasty rewards, if you know what you are looking for. Join our park naturalist as you explore off trail to find mushrooms like the chanterelle, chicken of the woods or, if you’re lucky, the colorful lobster. Long pants and sturdy shoes are advised. This program is recommended for ages 8 and over.

10–11 AM Step back in time as we walk through the site of Old Crow Wing. In the 1860s Old Crow Wing was a bustling community on the edge of the frontier. By the mid-1870s it was little more than a “ghost town.” Meet at the picnic shelter building, located next to the picnic area parking lot, 1/4 mile west of the park office.

12:30–3 PM The sport of shooting arrows has been around for thousands of years. First humans used archery as a way to hunt animals and later as a way to compete against each other. Archery is an activity that people from all walks of life and almost every size and ability can participate and have fun. This program covers the basics of archery (safety, proper care of the equipment and how to use a bow). Participants will be able to practice their new skills on the range by taking a turn shooting arrows at targets. Some come learn a new life long skill.

07/16/16 Civilian Conservation Corp Hiking Tour
1 PM to 2 PM Fort Ridgely State Park has a rich history with the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) and the Veterans Conservation Corp (VCC). During the 1930s the state park and historic site benefited from their labor with new park construction and archeological discoveries. The hiking tour will go through wooded hillsides along unpaved trails. The hike will start at the Commissary building at the Historic Site.

1 PM to 2 PM Imagine finding a piece of 99% pure copper. Over 7,000 years ago, the post-Ice Age hunter/gatherers found such pieces along the North Shore. Join expert Larry Furo as he shares the history of the Old Copper Culture. Follow copper’s tale from chunk to tool. Track the development of spearpoints, tools and decorative objects as we create a historical timeline of the Minnesota’s Arrowhead Region. Begins in the Visitor Center Auditorium.

1–5 PM Tell your story today! As part of the New London Oral History Project this is your opportunity to stop in and share your story about New London or Sibley State Park; whether it is a memory camping at the park or why you have made New London your community.

StoryCorps is a app designed to make oral interviews and storytelling collection easy. Meet with a volunteer who will have the app downloaded. Either tell your story alone, be interviewed by the volunteer or bring a friend and interview each other!! Drop-in anytime day of at the stops to schedule and conduct your interview.

2 PM to 4 PM Come to Dragons & Damsels, a fun, family-friendly program. We will start with a short information session on dragonflies and damselflies. Then head outside to learn how to catch dragons and damsels, learn how to hold them, observe specimens up close, and use a key to identify them down to the family. 2–3:30 PM Fish, crawdads, and water striders come to mind when people think of animals that live in a stream. There are, however, other tiny creatures under and amongst the rocks of Forestville’s streams that can be used as an indicator of stream health. Help a park naturalist capture and identify these hidden animals during this fun and refreshing program! Shorts and old shoes that can be worn in the water are advised (flip flops are not recommended). Meet at the amphitheater.

7 PM to 8:30 PM Take a short half hour lake tour of the park, on the 24 passenger pontoon boat. The trips will leave from the dock on the east side of the Bass Creek foot bridge at 7p.m., 7:30p.m., and 8 p.m.. Passengers accepted on a first come first served basis, maximum capacity 24 passengers per trip. All pontoon trips are subject to favorable weather conditions.

For more than a century people have pondered the purpose of the Blue Mounds rock alignment – a line of quartzite rocks that by coincidence or design are arranged in a line that lines up with the sunrise and sunset on the Spring and Fall Equinox. Join Bud Johnston, member of the Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers as he shares his theories, insight and research on the Blue Mounds legendary “stone fence”.

07/16/16 Archaeology at the Little Elk River Mission Site
8 PM to 9 PM In 1839 a Methodist Episcopal Mission was established on the Mississippi River, near the village of the influential Ojibwe leader Hole-in-the-Day the Elder. Although the mission was only there for a couple of years, this archaeological site in the Little Elk Unit of Charles A. Lindbergh State Park holds potential to answer important questions about a pivotal time in Minnesota’s history. This slide show and talk about archaeology conducted at the site in 2014 will be followed by a look at some artifacts uncovered in the excavations. Meet at the Amphitheater. In case of rain the program will be held in the picnic shelter.

8:30–10 PM Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park is home to a healthy little brown bat colony that thrives on the insects in and around the Park. Watch hundreds of bats depart from their roosts for an evening of feeding. While our bats are healthy, you will also find out what emerging threat has decimated bat numbers elsewhere.
