MN Nature Week Activities May 13-20, AKA “Take a Mom Fishing Weekend”

(2018) MN Nature in St Paul, Minnesota, has some fun FREE outdoor activities in store for you! In May we think of cherry blossoms, flowering crab apples, pink redbuds, and fragrant lilacs (featured photo by The Symmetric)—and, of course, moms . . . and in Minnesota, that means FISHING OPENER!

Happy mother’s day! Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 13, and fishing opener weekend doubles as Take a Mom Fishing Weekend. Mothers who are residents of Minnesota can fish without a license from Saturday, May 12, to Sunday, May 13. Fishing is allowed only for species that have open fishing seasons.

If your mom is not so into the fishing, maybe she’d like to visit a garden center or do some landscaping. Looking for the perfect shrub for your mom’s yard? Check out Wildflowers list or this  U of M research list.

May is also the time of the prized morel mushroom! Sometimes morels come out as early as April. To keep tabs on when they’re popping, check out the Minnesota Morel Hunters facebook page! You might as well give them a “Like” because, well, they’re cool.

All activities free unless otherwise noted. For state parks you need a MN state park permit on your vehicle. Day passes and annual passes are available at the park or online here.
