Weekend Nature Activities: Jan. 16–19, 2015

Candlelit trails, hot cocoa, bonfires, the Minnesota Boat Show . . . Ahh, Minnesota in January is dreamy.

And this weekend is Take A Kid Ice Fishing statewide! Anglers 16 and older do not need a license if they are accompanied by a child younger than 16 and are actively participating in Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing Weekend.

Free instruction, equipment and bait provided during these times:

1/17 Lake Bronson State Park, 11–2pm
1/18 Whitewater State Park, 10–noon and 1–3pm

 

Friday, Jan. 16

Night Sky of the Northwoods
6:30–8pm Short presentation, viewing with provided telescopes and binocs.
Soudan Underground Mine State Park (use winter service entrance and park by visitor center)

Saturday, Jan. 17

Annual Snow Stomp
9–4pm See how large snow blocks are made and help out. Details HERE

Snowshoe & History Hike
10–11:30am Snowshoes avail. to rent $6. Learn about snowshoeing then hike around park to look at historic buildings and learn about the park’s past, including CCC and WPA camps in the 1930s.
Flandrau State Park (meet at Beach House)

Wintering Golden Eagle Survey
10–noon You can help the National Audubon Society, MN and Wisc. DNRs and National Eagle Center better understand golden eagles wintering in sourtheastern MN and southwest Wisc. You’ll get a short intro. to the project and birds, then visit sites where eagles have frequented over the past years. Binocs, spotting scopes and brochures available.

Bucket (Check!)List: Snowshoeing
10am–3pm Short intro to basics then check out snowshoes for use, pick out your snowshoes, then explore the park. Return shoes by 3pm. Limited number of snowshoes so you may call to sign up in advance (651)433-0500.

Winter Orienteering
noon–3pm Use map and compass while you hike, ski or snowshoe to find your way through the woodlands. Beginners welcome but please arrive early for instruction.

Brrr–midji Kids Can Fish!
12:30–3pm Kids 8–15 join park naturalist for afternoon of perch fishin on Lake Bemidji (adults over 18 with child under 16 do not need license during Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing Weekend).

5–9pm Learn about winter constellations, look for stars, listen for owls. 2.5-mile trail. Then relax with hot apple cider, cookies, and roasted marshmallows.

44th Annual Ski Race
9am Adult registration begins at 9am, then starts at 10:30. Children register at 11am and start at 1pm (pre-register $8 or on race day $12; max per family kids race pre-register $20 or race day $30). Ages 5 under free pre-registerd or race day $12. High school/college pre-register $12 or race day $17. Adults pre-register $30 or race day $40. Wood Ski Tour pre-register $15 or race day $25.

noon – 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in January. Bring your family for a winter escape in the warm greenhouse and find out how animals survive the winter. Search for tropical fruit and flowers that sustain migrant birds and monarch butterflies. Create a seed ornament to take home and feed the hardy non-migrant birds outside your window!

Freeze Yur Bags Off Tournament: take part in the inaugural Frozen Bean Bag Tournament.  This is an 8-team bean bag tournament that takes place on 4th Street near the James. J. Hill Library in Rice Park.  It is outside so come prepared! The cost is $25.oo per team.  Entry fee includes entrance into the tournament; 2 drink tickets (one for each member of the team) for the ice bar (non-alcoholic options available for participants under 21) and prizes for winning teams.
